Almost everyone has heard of cavities. If you’ve ever had a cavity, you know the process it takes to get it treated. However, you may not understand how cavities develop and all the techniques and treatments you can use to help keep your smile safe.

Cavities are often the result of plaque buildup which wears down tooth enamel and forms a hole in your tooth. This hole is known as a cavity. If left untreated, bacteria will be able to enter the tooth and cause infection and pulp damage. Thus, the cavity will need to be treated which a majority of the time requires a simple dental filling.

However, cavity prevention is the most effective treatment for dealing with cavities. Prevention includes always brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing once a day as well. If you struggle with traditional toothbrushes and floss, try using an electric toothbrush or water flosser.

Another helpful factor in keeping your smile safe from cavities is to always eat a healthy diet that is nutritious and low in enamel-eroding substances such as sugar. Also, remember to clean your mouth after eating by brushing 30 minutes after a meal, chewing sugarless gum, or using a mouthwash to rinse away debris.
